There are two certainties heading into INDY NXT by Firestone qualifying for the Detroit Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon: The track record for the INDYCAR development is in serious jeopardy, and Louis Foster remains fast.

Foster led the pre-qualifying practice Saturday morning on the streets of Detroit with a top lap of 1 minute, 5.7200 seconds in the No. 26 Copart/Novara Technologies car fielded by Andretti Global. That lap is quicker than the track record of 1:06.8374 set last year by Foster on the nine-turn, 1.645-mile temporary street circuit.

British driver Foster also led the opening practice Friday at 1:06.8356, as he improved his best time by more than a second Saturday morning.

Up next is qualifying at 11:20 a.m. (Peacock, INDYCAR LIVE, INDYCAR Radio Network), which should be a tight tussle for the top spot if the 45-minute pre-qualifying practice is any indication. Just .3536 of a second separated the top four drivers, and the top eight drivers all were quicker than Foster’s track-record lap from 2023.

James Roe helped Andretti Global land the top two spots on the speed chart with his best lap of 1:05.9193 in the No. 29 Topconn car. Nolan Siegel was third at 1:05.9659 in the No. 39 HMD Motorsports machine.

Championship leader Jacob Abel was fourth at 1:06.0736 in the No. 51 Abel Construction car fielded by Abel Motorsports. Rookie Caio Collet rounded out the top five at 1:06.3404 in the No. 18 HMD Motorsports car.

Wall contact triggered a red flag late in the session, as rookie Myles Rowe spun and hit the barrier at the exit of Turn 2 in the No. 99 HMD Motorsports with Force Indy car. Rowe was unhurt.
