Jacob Abel is staying with his family team, Abel Motorsports, in 2023 for his second full season in Indy Lights.
Abel, 21, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, will continue to drive the No. 51 Abel Construction entry. He scored five top-five finishes in his rookie Indy Lights season, with a best finish of fourth at the season-ending races at Portland International Raceway and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
“I’m really excited to be back with the team in 2023,” Abel said. “We were able to build a strong foundation, and the difference between us at the first race of the season in St. Pete and now is amazing. There were definitely some results that slipped away from us for one reason or another, but we knew this was going to be a building year for both the team and me personally.”
Veteran team manager John Brunner was impressed with Abel’s rookie campaign, which ended in eighth in the season standings.
“Jacob has shown tremendous amounts of progress this year, and it was really exciting to watch,” Brunner said. “He is really growing into his own as a race car driver, as is the team we have been able to build around him. I think 2023 will be a great year for Jacob and all of Abel Motorsports, now that the first season is under our belt we can really go out and fight for race wins.”
Abel Motorsports is planning on expanding to a multicar entry for the 2023 Indy Lights season, with the team evaluating drivers for additional seats.
