INDIANAPOLIS — As the eighth annual Chris Griffis Memorial Test concluded Sunday for the Mazda Road to Indy at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, several drivers had the opportunity to test with teams they are considering for 2019.

Darren Keane, an 18-year-old Floridian, found success across multiple steps of the INDYCAR-sanctioned ladder system. A day after clocking a lap that stood as fastest for the weekend in a Pro Mazda Championship presented by Cooper Tires car, Keane posted the top laps of Sunday afternoon’s Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship powered by Mazda sessions.

On Saturday, Keane drove for RP Motorsports Racing, unofficially breaking the Pro Mazda track record with a lap of 1 minute, 19.2971 seconds (110.728 mph) on the 2.439-mile road course that uses a portion of the famous 2.5-mile oval. The Pro Mazda opportunity arose when a friend at the team texted Keane asking if he’d like to test the PM-18 chassis that debuted in competition this year.

“I’ve always wanted to drive the new Pro Mazda and I was just really excited,” Keane said. “Honestly, I just wanted to do it for the experience and have some fun and really enjoy it. I wanted to test if I could hop in and out between cars. I used to do that in go-karts when I was 10 and it would always catch me out in a go-kart, so I wanted to see if I could do it in a race car.

“Obviously, it worked out pretty well so I think that’s a big credit to (chassis supplier) Tatuus and Elite Engines though, just because it’s supposed to be a ladder system, not a big leap of faith or jump into the next car.

Keane drove the No. 2 Cape Motorsports car in USF2000 testing. He finished 14th in the 2018 USF2000 standings driving for Newman Wachs Racing.

“It’s been amazing working with the Cape Motorsports guys and everything’s just so professional and same with RP, just a great environment, laid back but it’s all about business. We all want to be up front and it was a good day (Saturday).”

While the Pro Mazda car has 100 more horsepower than the USF2000 car (275 to 175) and larger wings and tires to match, the physical demands of driving in sessions for both series on Saturday caught up with Keane on Sunday.

“I was feeling it when I woke up (Sunday) morning and I had to actually put a pad in for my neck in the last (Pro Mazda) session,” Keane admitted. “In the second session in Pro Mazda, I was holding on for dear life and the pad helped a lot. It’s amazing how much of a difference it made.”

Hunter McElrea set the fastest USF2000 lap of the weekend in the Sunday morning session, with a lap of 1:24.5064 (103.902 mph) in the No. 22 Pabst Racing entry. Victor Franzoni, who drove this season in Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires after winning the 2017 Pro Mazda championship, returned to a Pro Mazda car on Sunday and turned the fast lap of the day (1:19.6712, 110.208 mph) driving for Turn 3 Racing.

In Indy Lights, 2017 USF2000 champion Oliver Askew set the fastest time of the day during the morning session in the No. 27 Andretti Autosport Dallara IL-15 with a lap of 1:15.0008 (117.071 mph).
