LEXINGTON, Ohio -- The battle for the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires championship, which includes a prize of entry into three rounds of the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series, heated up dramatically following two action-packed Cooper Tires Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio Powered by Mazda races.
With two races left Sept. 11-13 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif., Jack Harvey of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian leads Spencer Pigot of Juncos Racing by six points. Ed Jones of Carlin is 18 points out of first.
Sean Rayhall, who is undertaking only a partial campaign with 8Star Motorsports, won the second race of the weekend on the 2.258-mile, 13-turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. His drive was aided when the cars of pole sitter Harvey and Jones made contact while battling for the lead.
Rayhall measured his pace to perfection, crossing the finish line less than a second clear of Carlin’s Max Chilton, who recorded his third successive podium finish. Pigot finished third.
Rayhall is the eighth different winner in 14 races this season.
In the first race, RC Enerson won from the pole in his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian entry.
Chilton finished second, while Shelby Blackstock of Andretti Autosport recorded his first podium finish.
