WEST ALLIS, Wis. -- Another Indy Lights track qualifying record falls at the wheels of the Dallara IL-15 chassis matched to the turbocharged 2.0-liter Mazda MZR-R engine.
This time, Spencer Pigot earned the pole for the Grand Prix of Milwaukee with a two-lap average speed of 150.868 mph on the 1.015-mile Milwaukee Mile oval in the No. 12 Juncos Racing entry to lead four drivers who were faster than Eteban Guerrieri's two-lap record of 149.005 mph set in 2011.
Pigot, 21, won the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires race at Milwaukee in 2014 on the way to the series title. He carries momentum into the 100-lap race July 12 having swept the doubleheader last month on the streets of Toronto.
"We've seen it throughout the year the new IL-15 with the Mazda engine and the Cooper Tires has been a fantastic package," said Pigot, who trails Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires championship leader Jack Harvey by 10 points heading into the race. "It's a very quick race car and a lot of fun to drive. The car was handling beautifully today, and when you get a car like that on an oval it's just a joy."
It was his fourth pole of the season and first on an oval.
"We have a morning warm-up (July 12) where we'll be focusing on longer runs and see how we are in traffic because it's great to be out front, but when you catch a lapped car and can't pass it creates a lot of problems," he said. "It's great to get the bonus point for pole, but in my mind it's even better that we have a few guys between us in terms of rivals so hopefully they stay there during the race."
RC Enerson, driving the No. 7 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian car, earned a front-row start with a two-lap average of 150.431 mph. Kyle Kaiser qualified third (149.988 mph) in the No. 18 Juncos Racing car and Harvey qualified fourth (149.778 mph) in the No. 42 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian entry.
