Jack Harvey and Sean Rayhall recorded victories over the weekend in the Mazda Grand Prix of Indianapolis Presented by Cooper Tires on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's 2.439-mile road course.
In the second Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires race, Rayhall, 20, from Winston, Ga., overtook pole sitter Ed Jones at the start and held on to win despite almost race-long pressure from Harvey.
Unfortunately for Harvey, a mechanical problem on the final lap dropped him to an unrepresentative fifth, allowing Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian teammate RC Enerson and Carlin’s Max Chilton to round out the podium.
Harvey, who set a track lap record in qualifying for the first race, easily won from the pole. Rayhall finished a strong second for 8Star Motorsports and Jones placed third.
Harvey, from Lincoln, England, has finished among the top five in all but one of his 21 Indy Lights starts dating to the beginning of the 2014 season. He also has five wins to his credit.
“It was a great day, starting from pole and getting my first win of the year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway," Harvey said.
Jones holds a 166-162 championship points lead over Harvey, with Spencer Pigot seven points farther back as the series prepares for its signature race of the season, the Freedom 100, on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval on May 22 as part of the #MRTI FreedomFest weekend that leads up to the 99th Indianapolis 500.
