TORONTO -- Alex Baron completed a weekend sweep on the 1.755-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit with his first Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires victory.

Baron, driving the No. 4 Belardi Auto Racing entry, earned the Sunoco Pole Award and then outdueled teammate Gabby Chaves to the checkered flag in the 40-minute race by 1.2358 seconds. Chaves, also starting on the front row in the No. 5 Belardi Auto Racing entry, finished .3545 of a second ahead of Jack Harvey in the No. 42 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian car.

Andretti Autosport teammates Matthew Brabham and Zach Veach finished fourth and fifth.

Baron, 19, of France, won two of the four races he competed in last season in USF2000.

"I'm really honored and thrilled to win in Indy Lights, which is a step before IndyCar," said Baron, who led all 36 laps on the wet racetrack.

Chaves, who entered the race 11 points ahead of Veach in the championship standings, increased that margin to 21 points heading to an Aug. 2-3 doubleheader at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. It's the 10th and 11th race of 14 on the schedule.

"You always come to the racetrack wanting to win, but if you can't you hope that your teammate can or your main rivals in the championship don't," said Chaves, won won the previous two races on ovals. "You can't win them all and sometimes to win the championship you have to finish second. I'll keep trying to win races, but today was a good day for the team. It gave us a good bump in the championship."

Chaves was among the Indy Lights drivers to test recently at Mid-Ohio, where he earned his first victory in the series last August.

"Being a doubleheader, it will be an important weekend, and thankfully we were pretty strong in the test," said Chaves, a Miami resident. "I'm hoping to keep extending our lead."
