Zach Veach

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Zach Veach earned his second Sunoco Pole Award of the season by recording a best lap of 1 minute, 17.3743 seconds on the 2.38-mile, 17-turn Barber Motorsports Park road course for the first of two 30-lap races.

Veach, who started second in the opening round on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., on March 30 and won his first Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires race, started from the pole April 13 in Long Beach, Calif., and was runner-up to Gabby Chaves of Belardi Auto Racing.

The first Legacy 100 gets the green flag at 11 a.m. (CT) April 26. The IMS Radio Network broadcast in conjunction with real-time Timing & Scoring is available on www.indycar.com and the INDYCAR 14 app. The second race is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CT) April 27.

Chaves, 20, from Miami, had been the quickest for much of the 45-minute session, and improved his best lap to 1:17.614 with fresh tires with 10 minutes left. Veach recorded his quickest laps in the next minute, and though Chaves again improved his lap time it wasn't enough to unseat Veach.

The lap posted by Veach, driving the No. 26 entry for Andretti Autosport, was .1509 of a second quicker than Alex Baron in the No. 4 Belardi Auto Racing car in his third Indy Lights race.

"I am ecstatic to get my second Indy Lights pole of the season," said Veach, 19, of Stockdale, Ohio. "We are off to a great start. We really struggled in practice (April 24) and this morning but we put our heads together and thought 'what haven't we changed yet' and threw some things at the car and it really was the right call. Credit to my engineer Doug Zister and my team, Andretti Autosport, for giving me a great ride in the qualifying session."

Chaves will join Luiz Razia in the No. 7 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian car on Row 2. Jack Harvey, driving the No. 42 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian car, and Matthew Brabham in the No. 83 Andretti Autosport entry will be on Row 3.
