LONG BEACH, Calif. -- What's that about turnabout?

Gabby Chaves overtook pole sitter Zach Veach entering the left-hand Turn 1 of the 11-turn, 1.968-mile street circuit and went on to win the caution-free Long Beach 100 by .6364 of a second over the Andretti Autosport driver. Two weeks earlier, Veach passed pole sitter Chaves in the right-hand Turn 1 of the 14-turn, 1.8-mile St. Petersburg street course and earned his first Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires victory.

"I was like, 'Take that, Zach,' '' Chaves said. "It definitely pays to be on the clean side of the track with braking as I found out at St. Pete. I locked up my tires and Zach was able to get a clean run around me. I managed to get him this time. I've always said this is my favorite street course and I'm very pleased to get the win here."

Chaves, driving for Belardi Auto Racing, was the series championship runner-up last year and considered a title contender this season. Veach holds a one-point advantage heading to a doubleheader April 26-27 at Barber Motorsports Park.

"It's a good place to be after Round 2 and a nice way to start out, but we still have a long way to go," said Veach, in his second season in Indy Lights.

Matthew Brabham, also driving for Andretti Autosport, started and placed third, while Jack Harvey gained two positions to finish fourth in a Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb Agajanian car.
